PMMA (Polymethyl Methacrylate)
Signature Plastics extrudes custom PMMA profiles for applications where visual clarity and surface quality are the primary requirements. PMMA is commonly selected when a profile needs to transmit light, present a clean appearance, or maintain sharp edge definition in interior or controlled environments.
PMMA extrusions are used in display, lighting, and architectural applications where appearance and optical performance matter more than impact resistance.
What is PMMA?
Polymethyl methacrylate is a rigid thermoplastic material known for its high transparency and smooth surface finish. In extrusion, PMMA is used for profiles that need to remain clear or translucent and hold consistent shape with clean edges.
PMMA is not used where high impact resistance or abuse is expected. It is chosen when visual performance and finish quality are the driving factors.
Typical PMMA Applications
PMMA is commonly specified for extruded profiles used in visible and light-transmitting applications. Applications include:
- Lighting diffusers and lens profiles
- Display and showcase profiles
- Signage and graphic frames
- Architectural glazing and trim profiles
- Protective covers in low-impact environments
- Decorative and design-focused profiles
Many PMMA profiles are cut, polished, or assembled after extrusion to meet installation or design requirements.
Advantages of Extruded PMMA
- High transparency and light transmission
- Smooth surface finish suitable for visible use
- Clean edge definition and consistent profile shape
- Lightweight compared to glass
- Suitable for interior and controlled environments
- Can be produced in clear or tinted formulations
PMMA is typically selected when a profile needs to look clean, transmit light, and maintain visual quality, rather than resist heavy impact or flex in service.
